Trends come and go, but Winged Liner has stood the test of time – I mean, who Not Enjoy a great cat eye. Of course, the fastest way to the sharpest wings is with one of the preferably black liquid eyeliner around. The thin, ink-like liquid is the best formula, and the best part is that you have many options to choose from, according to New York City-based makeup artist Jamie Dorman. “You can either use pencil liner, where the formula flows through a brush tip, or the inkwell style, where you dip an applicator into the product,” she says.
For beginners, Dorman says using a pencil eyeliner can be easier to create precise lines and designs. If you’re using a pen, Dorman recommends squeezing and flexing the tip on the back of your hand when you find product flow stops to get it going again. One thing to remember about eyeliner pencils is that you use them to lots of pressure, expect some smearing and smearing.
If liquid eyeliner pencils aren’t your jam, fret not, because Dorman says inkwell liners are an easier option when it comes to controlling the amount of product to use. “If there’s too much product on the applicator, just wipe the applicator on a tissue or palette to get the exact amount you want,” she says.
No matter what type of liner you use for your eye makeup, Dorman says applying it slowly and evenly is the key to sharp, perfect wings. “Draw the eye slowly and in thin lines to gradually build thickness,” she says. If you need to cleanse your lines, Dorman recommends dipping a cotton swab in moisturizer and removing the excess product to help thin and sharpen your lines.
