In these lands of the Valle del Ambroz it now smells like spring, as if life had just begun, far from the news and asphalt. On Abbey (Cáceres) little more than three hundred people live. And yet, two steps from the town is the Silver Highway, which follows a similar route in some of its sections to Itinerary XXIV described by Antonino. It was then – eleventh and twelfth centuries – borderland and dangerous. And it was also the place where a group of Cistercian monks began to build their monastery in the 12th century. Centuries later, one of the most beautiful, unknown and interesting palaces in Spain would emerge from those first walls.
