Last Monday, June 7, Spain launched the so-called ‘Covid passport‘, a document that aims to reactivate international tourism this summer. Information regarding the coronavirus vaccines that an individual has received, as well as the tests that have been carried out and whether or not the coronavirus has passed. In this way, the pandemic can be controlled by preventing contagions from occurring when traveling between countries.

However, this document is not proof of travel around the world. It may only be used within the limits of the European Union. What happens then if I want to travel to another country like the United States? Will it be possible to go to spend the holidays?

Travel to the United States

As the US embassy in Spain and Andorra explains, it will not be possible to travel to the United States from Spain for tourist reasons since, according to the Presidential Proclamation 10143, entry to the United States continues to be suspended for foreign citizens who have been in one of the 26 countries that comprise the Schengen area, Spain included, in the 14 days prior to your arrival at the port of entry to the United States.

Thus, even with a valid visa or ESTA, it will be impossible to travel to the United States from our country, unless one of the exceptions established in the proclamation (traveling for work, emergency or humanitarian reasons).

Travel restrictions will not apply to US citizens lawfully permanent residents of the United States, as well as to certain immediate family members of US citizens and other individuals specified in the proclamation.

Can Americans come to Spain?

Last Monday Spain reopened its borders to all passengers from countries outside the European Union as long as they can prove that they have received the complete schedule of the coronavirus vaccine.

In this way, as confirmed last Friday by the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, this will include passengers from the United States who have been immunized with any of the drugs endorsed by the European Medicines Agency or that are included in the emergency use list prepared by the World Health Organization.
