CPC, the mouthwash compound that stops the coronavirus

A substance present in some mouthwashes, the Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), is capable of reducing up to 1,000 times the infectivity of SARS CoV-2 in cell cultures in the laboratory. If the results published in the “Journal of Dental Research” are confirmed in a clinical trial in people, we would be facing a simple protective barrier against SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

This molecule, present in some oral antiseptics, reduces the infectivity of the Alpha variant by more than 1,000 times of SARS-CoV-2 – described for the first time in the United Kingdom – in studies carried out in cells in the laboratory.
