Onitsuka Tiger: You should take note of these trendy sneakers for summer 2023.
New Balance has the stylized letter “N”, Adidas the iconic stripes and Nike the Swoosh. What about Onitsuka’s tiger? The Japanese brand, which belongs to the sports company Asics, is known for the “Tiger Stripes” on its sneakers: two intersecting vertical lines with two slightly curved lines that run laterally from the heel of the shoe to the ball of the foot. These are not only used for decoration, but when they were first released in the 1960s, they were also intended to reinforce the shoe and thus ensure safety and comfort.
At the time, the design was said to have been created in collaboration with top athletes and was – as appropriate – launched as the “Olympic Line” two years before the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.
More than 50 years later, Onitsuka Tiger’s “Mexico 66” model enjoys renewed popularity. And not during sports in the gym or arena, but in everyday life on the street, in a cafe or even in the office.

After the Japanese sports brand founded by Kihachiro Onitsuko in 1949 changed its name to Asics in 1977, Onitsuka Tiger was resold as a lifestyle-focused sub-brand. In 2002 Onitsuka Tiger was finally relaunched, successfully. A year later, Uma Thurman rocked the brand’s yellow and black sneakers with her iconic yellow and black outfit in “Kill Bill.”
In 2023, the nostalgic retro look of Onitsuka Tiger sneakers celebrates a comeback. The classic “Mexico 66” model in yellow seems to be particularly popular. No wonder, after all, the bright color is a welcome change from classic black or white sneaker colorways.
Thanks to their simple fit, the shoes go well with all kinds of looks.
