Niklas Kaul honored for fair play: ‘But I was also very surprised’ – decathletes start season in Ratingen

Sport

“In the all-around you often get along. So for me it’s more of a prize than the competition,” he explained.

Kaul won’t start the decathlon season until the all-around meet in Ratingen (June 17/18). “That’s the clear plan,” Kaul said in a session with the media on Thursday. A start at the traditionally first meeting of the athletic kings in Götzis (May 27/28) is out of the question for the 25-year-old “99 percent”.

“We want to give new impulses this year”, said the athlete of the year, who has decided to change the season plan in view of the World Cup: “I want to train technical disciplines in individual competitions”. For Kaul, the focus is on the sprint, jumping and discus disciplines, “because I had big fluctuations there last year.”

The world title fights, the highlight of the season, will take place in Budapest from August 19-27. The 2019 world champion already has the direct norm of 8460 points in his pocket, but he wants to confirm it in Ratingen. However, there will no longer be a special retreat before the event for the Mainz student: “I’m preparing for Ratingen at home, also because I simply have to go to university.”
