Inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) usually occurs as a result of viral or bacterial infections that have not been adequately treated. Other possible causes include autoimmune diseases, excessive alcohol or drug use, and certain medications such as diuretics or antibiotics. Even after vaccinations with the corona vaccines from BioNTech/Pfizer or Moderna, myocardial inflammation occurred in some cases. In this case, men were affected more often than women.
In the worst case, myocarditis can weaken the heart so much that sudden cardiac death can occur. Left untreated, myocarditis can also become chronic, causing long-term damage to the heart.
