How many cities are there in the world?

This question is actually not easy to answer, because each country has its own definition of the number of inhabitants by which a municipality is considered a city. In Germany, localities with between 5,000 and 20,000 inhabitants are considered small cities, medium-sized cities have between 20,000 and 100,000 inhabitants, and cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants are considered large cities. It can be assumed that there are many thousands of cities in the world with at least 5000 inhabitants.

There are more reliable data for even larger agglomerations. So there was second one United Nations report in 2018 1860 cities in the world with at least 300,000 inhabitants. Nearly 550 cities had at least 1 million inhabitants, and the number of so-called megacities with more than 10 million inhabitants was in 2021 according to the “Federal Statistical Office‘ at 34.
