Colorful wedding dress: Designer Ellen Van Dusen walked down the aisle in refreshing yellow.

Ellen Van Dusen and Ben Sigerson’s marriage had an unusually long span: The couple met in elementary school in Washington, DC and remained friends through high school. After studying in several states, they met again at parties when they moved to New York after graduation. Finally, in 2018, the two met by chance on the subway and discovered they lived on the exact same street in New York’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. They decided to have a drink together – the beginning of their love story.

Finally, in August 2022, Ellen, a designer and founder of the Dusen Dusen label, and Ben, a VP of a natural language processing company, went for a walk after dinner. At one point he offered her a roll of marshmallows, not unusual for Ellen as her sweet lover. But the content of the role was actually a surprise – an engagement ring from Karl Fritsch.

The couple got married on April 29, 2023 in Savannah, Georgia. In the evening, the two were invited to a housewarming party at Ellen’s grandmother’s house, hosted by Gina Berchin. Ellen, who likes to dress up, wore a dress by Cecilie Bahnsen with a scarlet slip underneath, matching stockings, statement earrings by JW Anderson, and a resin necklace and bracelet by Braxton Congrove. She completed her look with an Alaïa bag and shoes by Marni. Ben, in turn, wore an Issey Miyake suit and a Marni shirt.

Ellen chose a yellow wedding dress

On Saturday, Ellen and Ben had a complimentary wedding ceremony hosted by Tara Skinner Events. The venue was The Wyld, a waterfront restaurant on Countryside Creek in Savannah. The couple and their wedding party arrived by boat as storm clouds gathered overhead. It was a dramatic performance: Just as the wedding party arrived at the covered dock, a torrential downpour began, as Ellen’s brothers played “Moon River” on pedal steel and acoustic guitar.

Despite the gloomy weather, it was a colorful wedding day. Instead of sticking to tradition and going for a white bridal look, Ellen chose a yellow Lela Rose gown with a big floral detail. “I fell in love with the dress right away,” says the designer. “I ordered it right away and luckily it arrived a few days before my departure.” Wedding speaker Tasha Goldthwait wore a bright red dress designed by Narciso Rodriguez. During the ceremony, the trio stood in front of a powder blue ball made by Ellen’s father and painted by the couple themselves. “My yellow dress, our celebrant’s red dress, Ben’s dark suit, and the blue dot made for a beautiful color palette,” says the bride.

“The whole thing felt chaotic, but in a beautiful way”

After a heartfelt speech from Tasha that made the couple laugh and cry, the two exchanged Claire’s mood rings. “Ben and I were both nervous. Add to that the mad storm in the background. It felt chaotic, but in a beautiful way,” Ellen said of the ceremony. The pair walked down the aisle to Mickey and Sylvia’s “Love is Strange,” while Ben’s niece accompanied Ellen’s siblings on tambourine.
