TV pundit Didi Hamann believes Ilkay Gündogan is obsolete in the DFB squad: ‘They simply have better players’

According to the former national team player, there is currently no need for the 32-year-old’s style of play in the DFB team.

“You can take him 20 minutes if you have to keep the ball, so that could be useful. But I would also think about taking a player like that with me,” said Hamann.

Germany “simply have better players in this position. Younger players, better and more dynamic players. And the way we play, Gündogan is of no use to me.”

“This is absolutely not against the player. But the way we play at the moment: no!” added Hamann.

Hamann praises City’s outstanding results

Gündogan led Manchester City to a treble as captain last season and also impressed with outstanding performances in the biggest matches.

Not even Hamann could ignore him: “He was Manchester City’s best player, he probably overshadowed everyone. And he rightfully received these awards.”

But according to Hamann, good performances in a club shirt are not automatically reflected at international level: “If you’re a good club player, it doesn’t mean you’re a good international player. It’s always been like this in the past and it will be always again.”

National coach Hansi Flick seems to view the staff in a completely different way. Gündogan started all three of the 54-year-old’s World Cup matches and was also the national team captain in the last friendly against Colombia.

The DFB squad will test against Japan in Wolfsburg on Saturday (20:45 in the live ticker) before France visit Dortmund on Tuesday (21:00).
