Demonstrations against right-wing extremism in German cities over the weekend looked like massive, huge Sunday walks. The question of whether the “center” of society was evident here may give the wrong impression. The “center” refers to a left-to-right party landscape, a wide range between the edges. Or to a sociological average, in class position and attitudes, to ideas of normality. All of this is difficult to define with hundreds of thousands of participants showing up with a wide variety of signs, placards and slogans.
