What is “Normal People” about?

The book and the series of the same name “Normal People” are set in Ireland and are about the two teenagers Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal), whose love story spans their entire life. The inconspicuous Marianne comes from a wealthy family and is affected and faced with family difficulties, while Connell grows up in simple, loving circumstances and is a favorite at school. The plot is characterized not only by the emotional roller coaster that can be experienced while reading, but also by Sally Rooney’s special way of telling the story, which makes the almost indescribable describable.

The coming-of-age story was published in 2020 in a German-language edition under the title “Normal People”. The book was adapted as a series with twelve episodes by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald; co-produced by BBC3 and Hulu. The “Normal People” series premiered in the UK in April 2020.

The plot of “Conversations with Friends”

Sally Rooney made her writing debut with “Conversations with Friends” during her student days. This story is also about her – to put it simply – about love. The protagonists Frances (Alison Oliver) and Nick (Joe Alwyn) begin a relationship, even though Nick is married to Melissa (Jemima Kirke), with whom Frances actually has a friendship. As if that wasn’t enough, Frances’ ex-partner Bobbi (Sasha Lane) is also involved in the situation: she is interested in Melissa and therefore throws herself into the web of twisted love stories.

The novel “Conversations with Friends” was published in Germany in 2019 and was filmed as a twelve-episode series by Lenny Abrahamson and Leanne Welham in co-production with BBC3 and Hulu. The “Conversations with Friends” series first aired in May 2022.
