Lalou Roucayrol sponsors the Mini 650 Gascogna between Port-Médoc and Getxo

Vigo (Pontevedra)

The “Mini 650 Gascogna” will be held between July 28 and August 5 of this year, if the health situation does not disrupt the organization’s plans (GOS – Getxo Offshore Sports and Versace Sailing Management); and it will be the last qualifying race to participate in the Mini Transat of 2021.

In this its first edition, the “Mini Gascogna” comes to replace the Trasngascogne by decision of the sailors of the Mini 650 fleet; It will be held every two years, and presumably on this first run in two stages between the French from Port-Médoc and the Basque from Getxo.

To start off on the right foot, the organization will have the full support of the French sailor Lalou Roucayrol: “It is a great pleasure and pride to sponsor this new event, the Mini Gascogna, for several reasons: First for being Gascón, of course, second for being a former” Minista “, also for being the Godfather of Port-Médoc – port of departure and arrival of this regatta – and finally for being the owner, since our mini “900” will be present on this round trip, crossing the Cantabrian Sea, between Le Verdon-sur-Mer and Getxo. I wish the competitors and the best of luck. I give all my support to the organizers and partners of the event ”.

Another piece of information to take into account is the ecological profile that has been given to the “Mini Gascogna”; The two companies committed to their organization also hold the “Sailor for the Sea” seal, which indicates that the organizer has taken measures to reduce its impact on the environment by not using single-use plastic, prioritizing the consumption of local products and by organizing the collection of waste at the place where it is generated. In addition, the test will have a special award to the participant who demonstrates having a more respectful behavior with the environment.

More than 600 miles through the Cantabrian Sea in two stages in the Bay of Biscay is a route that does not give any margin to the fleet, whether the weather conditions are favorable or adverse. At first, the average temperatures on this coast are usually between 24 and 19 degrees Celsius; and the regime of light winds of the north component. The route will not be direct, for the first stage between Port-Médoc and Getxo the fleet will go to the island of Yeu after departure, and in the second stage Getxo and Port-Médoc the last 90-mile stretch before arrival is leaving to starboard the island of Ré and to port that of Oléron.

Of the two categories of Mini 650, the largest number is concentrated in Series boats with 46 registered and 10 in Prototypes validated by the Mini Class today on its page and that in the end they hope to reach 72 participants.—solitaire-1.html

On the part of GOS (Getxo Offshore Sports) they do not forget the importance that the Basque skippers José Luis Ugarte and Unai Basurko have had in oceanic regattas, considering that the participation of both sailors in the Round Alone solo world tours (in stages) and Vendée Globe can be the spring for the Getxo marina to be the reference port for sailors of the Mini 650 Class on the eastern coast of the Cantabrian Sea. A dream to which Ander Etxabe, head of the GOS company and former minister, aspires.
