The keys of 5 teachers to increase the concentration and autonomy of students at home

  • Mª Luz Cristóbal Gómez: «It is essential that the student feels a participant in their achievements»

Mari Luz Cirstóbal Gómez is the director of the Kumon Madrid-Pinar de Chamartín Center.

What is the method that you have followed to ensure that each student develops their maximum learning potential?

The main key is the extraordinary structure of the Kumon teaching material, perfectly designed for each student to progress at their own pace. Equally important is the guidance of the Kumon teacher, who, through deep observation of the student while he works, can draw up the best plan for him, design a tailor-made suit so that the tour through the different levels is ideal and prepares him to address the following blocks of content with solvency.

The pandemic has made it clear that students must be as autonomous as possible. What do you recommend for the child to achieve that autonomy?

The main keys are security and self-esteem. Create a climate of trust so that the student takes control of their work and evolution, “learning is an experience” and that is what we seek, that the learning experience is personal and individualized so that the student learns by himself with the material suitable at all times ».

In these times of online classes … How do you get the motivation of students, so important in learning?

It is essential that the student feels a participant in their achievements and evolution, it is very important to set challenges and objectives each day that they connect to their online class, it motivates them a lot to analyze if they have met the goals of the previous class and propose new challenges. The best motivation is the one that starts with a job well done and is what we look for in our students.

  • Carmen Pérez Álvarez: «I always start from the idea that any child loves to learn»

Carmen Pérez Álvarez is the director of the Kumon Vigo – As Travesas center

What is the method that you have followed to ensure that each student develops their maximum learning potential?

The first thing is to trust the student, think that his learning potential is unlimited and that he will be able to overcome the proposed challenge, transmit that confidence to him and his family and praise and share all his achievements. Second, and just as important, is to know the student and individualize, understand that each student is unique and our role is to provide the most appropriate for their development at all times, from the first day and at each moment of their learning.

The pandemic has made it clear that students must be as autonomous as possible. What do you recommend for the child to achieve that autonomy?

In order for a student to be autonomous, it is essential to establish a personalized study plan, that is, to ensure that the difficulty of the content they are dealing with is in accordance with their knowledge and with their learning moment, and that their progression is fluid, from the base until exceeding their school level.

Here confidence and self-esteem are also protagonists again to achieve that autonomy. Fortunately, skills are trained and achieved with practice and perseverance. Sometimes something as simple as explaining to a student “the rules of the game” and what we expect from him, will have the magical effect of getting that student to work with better posture, attention and autonomy.

In these times of online classes … How do you get the motivation of students, so important in learning?

I always start from the idea that any child loves to learn, they all like to get good grades and they all enjoy when they feel that what you propose they can achieve. If a student lives and accumulates experiences of success, they will undoubtedly help him to face the following goals with better motivation.

We must strive to know the student, we just have to know what to observe, know what their qualities are and what is the next step we want to take and if we praise everything they do well and positively allow them to learn from their mistakes, we will be providing them all the tools to work with a good attitude and motivation.

In summary, I believe that much more than threat, punishment or compulsory study, confidence in the abilities of the student, knowing and individualizing him at each moment of his learning and positive reinforcement through praise, work “the miracle” to get the student to develop their potential, learn to work independently and what is more important, enjoy it.

  • J. Navarro Tejero: «We must set short-term objectives that are feasible for the student to achieve»

Juncal Navarro Tejero is director of the Kumon Madrid center – Alberto Alcocer

What is the method that you have followed to ensure that each student develops their maximum learning potential?

The fundamental key is to promote and encourage self-learning. If a student feels capable of solving the exercises without the help of anyone else, we are reinforcing their self-confidence, their motivation to learn new content and their capacity for autonomous reasoning. At that point we are developing their learning capacity to the maximum.

The pandemic has made it clear that students must be as autonomous as possible. What do you recommend for the child to achieve that autonomy?

Autonomy at work must be worked on from the first moment when we start working on grassroots reinforcement. If the student knows how to face his work independently when they are contents that he knows, this form of study will transfer it to contents that he does not know. The role of the Kumon counselor is to provide the necessary guidelines to promote this autonomous work, finding out what your level of understanding is and guiding you to rely on what you know how to do to solve what you do not know how to do.

In these times of online classes … How do you get the motivation of students, so important in learning?

Setting short-term goals that are feasible for the student to achieve. By praising the achievement of these set goals, we ensure that the learning experience is rewarding and generates more desire to continue advancing and learning. It is essential to know the student well so that the objectives we set are adequate and effective to improve their motivation.

  • Julia Cabetas: “The student has to feel capable of doing it himself without the help of parents or teachers”

Julia Cabetas Pérez is director of the Kumon Toledo center – Buenavistadfasd

What is the method that you have followed to ensure that each student develops their maximum learning potential?

Carry out an initial assessment to know all the student’s strengths, have a clear objective and thus individualize the learning so that each student progresses at their own pace; but, above all, maintain the motivation so that they are the ones who wish to continue learning without fear of facing unknown content and that they experience the success of setting themselves a challenge and overcoming it.

The pandemic has made it clear that students must be as autonomous as possible. What do you recommend for the child to achieve that autonomy?

In my opinion, the student has to feel capable of doing it himself without the help of parents or teachers, because this way he will live a successful experience and will have the motivation to keep trying and thanks to how our material is structured, the student finds the solution by If only. Adults must provide them with these tools but above all have patience and believe in them.

In these times of online classes … How do you get the motivation of students, so important in learning?

In our online classes the counselor is there with the student, observes him, analyzes his processes and accompanies him and praises him so that in each session the student enjoys the pleasure of learning. Empathizing with each of the students, putting ourselves in their place, recognizing the effort and de-dramatizing the mistake I think is essential so that each online class session sees it as a challenge and a new opportunity to learn something new.

  • Matilde González: «Autonomy, like any skill, is something that must be worked on to achieve it»

Matilde González-Conejero is director of the Kumon Murcia – La Vega center

What are the most important keys for you to achieve that each student develops their maximum learning potential with Kumon?

It is essential to make a first assessment of the student’s learning situation in order to establish the most appropriate starting point. That the student begins to work putting the foundation he needs, but at the same time at a level that allows him to advance fluently and can feel motivated. Likewise, both family support encouraging the student to work daily, as well as correcting errors is another essential aspect in the work of the Kumon methodology.

Another important key would be in our orientation, both to the family, in how to face the difficulties that they may encounter in their daily work, as well as to the student in the personalized programming of their progress according to the objectives and capacities that we want to develop in each moment.

The pandemic has made it clear that students must be as autonomous as possible. What must a child have to achieve that autonomy?

Autonomy, like any skill, is something that must be worked on to achieve it. It is a fundamental goal at Kumon, so we basically promote autonomous learning, which means channeling the student through the development of their abilities so that they feel capable of solving for themselves.

Kumon material is specially designed for autonomous discovery. It is necessary to progressively advance and give the appropriate guidelines so that the student feels a learning experience in which he / she applies the tools provided by the methodology at all times and creates their own learning strategies.

In these times of online classes … How do you get the motivation of the students, so important in learning?

That a person feels capable is the best motivation we can give him. The material of any of the three methodologies that we work at Kumon (mathematics, reading or English), as I have said before, is perfectly designed so that the student can discover for himself how to do it.

Our task is to create the greatest impact with the least intervention. This makes him an active part of their learning, which is essential in the motivation of any person.

In addition, getting above their grade level as soon as possible is an impressive motivation for them, by minimizing the workload and having that all-important feeling of “I am capable and I trust myself.” Creating that trust for me is the biggest challenge.
