A new drug that has been shown to be effective and safe in an animal model could prevent Alzheimer’s disease by modulate, rather than inhibit, a key enzyme involved in the formation of amyloid plaques in the brain. It is a different mechanism than those used so far, according to a study published today in the “Journal of Experimental Medicine”.

However, as the study authors point out, although these data are an important step in advancing clinical trials, it is an experimental drug.

One of the key pathological features of Alzheimer’s disease involves the formation of amyloid plaques made up of small protein fragments.
