The young Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime incorporated Toni Nadal to his technical team ahead of the European clay court tour, the 20-year-old confirmed Thursday. In statements to journalists through Zoom, the world number 22 said that Nadal, Rafa Nadal’s longtime uncle and coach, would start working with him ahead of the Monte-Carlo Masters that starts on April 11.
“I will work with Toni from this tournament on,” said Auger-Aliassime, who is coached by Frederic Fontang. “We also had the opportunity to work with him, Fred and the rest of my team in Mallorca in December, but officially starting our relationship now.
“Our values and our work ethic really align, so for me that is a great thing personally and I am glad that it is part of my project and I hope that we can do great things in the future.”
Nadal, 60 years old, announced in 2017 that he would be stepping down as his nephew’s coach after more than a decade on the road. Now he runs the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca.
