Laser cutters are inherently high-precision tools that can be used to make cuts, labels and engravings with precision well below a millimeter. Only the insertion of the material to be worked and therefore the positioning of the cuts and incisions on it occurs via the trial and error method. Although the laser cutter offers a red laser light as a positioning aid, this rarely actually points to where the cutting beam will hit.
Precise positioning can minimize waste. And the subsequent processing of prefabricated parts, be they mobile phone cases or cases, will only be successful if the subsequent cuts and engravings are exactly where you want them. Otherwise, the housing opening for an additional switch is unlikely to be in the same row as those already present. Furthermore, precision laser machining of very small parts is virtually impossible.
In this article there is a way out: a camera is permanently fixed above the working table of the laser cutter. Your image is then displayed in the workspace of the Lightburn laser cutting software, so you can simultaneously see the design drawing and the cutting table with the material laid out on it. Alignment is really simple and this article assumes this Burning the Light (Download) already installed on your computer and configured for your laser cutter. If you haven’t already done so, you can find information about this in a separate article.
