13 tips to make makeup last longer

People & Style

Do you also wear makeup every morning, but at noon it almost seems like you don’t have any makeup on? STYLEBOOK explains why blush, lipstick and the like sometimes disappear so quickly and offers tips for long-lasting makeup.

Many women are familiar with the problem: in the morning, makeup, foundation, eye shadow and lipstick applied and barely two hours in the office, all the time and effort seem to have been in vain. Foundation looks blotchy, lipstick is gone, and eyeshadow has settled unattractively into the crease of my lid. The blame cannot be placed on oily skin or wind and weather. The wrong products and the wrong preparation also make makeup disappear faster.

Long stop thanks to good preparation

Prepare your face

A clean work surface is essential, and that goes for applying makeup too! Before applying make-up, cleanse your face with a delicate product to remove sebum and impurities. If makeup is applied to dirty skin, it crumbles later and excess oil prevents the foundation from sticking to the skin. Tip for oily skin types: dull the forehead, nose and chin with a sheer powder or scrub with anti-shine wipes before applying makeup.

Let the cream take effect

In summer, you should take care of your skin with a sun protection factor cream. However, it can happen that the SPF cream initially leaves a greasy film on the skin after application, which in turn means that the makeup does not hold well. Therefore, allow your skincare product to soak in thoroughly, ideally for up to 20 minutes. With dry skin, products usually absorb faster.

Smooth skin as a base for long-lasting make-up

Even makeup can’t stick well on an uneven surface. Therefore, use regular peels on your face — preferably one you’ve mixed yourself, with natural granules like salt flakes or nuts — or scrub it in with a fine beauty brush to rid your skin of flakes and dead skin cells.

Prime before foundation

If you want your make-up to last particularly long: apply the primer, i.e. the foundation before the foundation. This consists mainly of silicones, which lie like a veil in every wrinkle and thus prevent the make-up from settling into the fine lines and pores of the skin.

The right makeup routine for long-lasting use

The right products for a long hold

Liquid textures hold better, but not everyone likes them. Alternatively, mineral powder is recommended, which consists almost entirely of high-quality minerals and allows the skin to breathe particularly well. A tinted day cream provides extra care, but doesn’t cover as much.

Less foundation is more

Sometimes less really is more, and that goes for makeup too. Otherwise, excess layers can easily crumble and cause the unloved “cake” effect. A thin layer, on the other hand, looks much more natural and lasts longer, if only because it weighs less. Tip: Apply foundation with a makeup sponge and only then use a fine brush to apply a little concealer to small imperfections.

Lipsticks to kiss

Several times a day you (unconsciously) lick your lips, drink or eat something – no wonder the kissing mouth soon capitulates. Luckily, there are lipsticks that stick for a particularly long time. Attention: such formulations dry the skin of the lips the most, so take care of them from time to time with a grease stick. By the way, regular peelings are especially important on the lips so that the lipstick does not further emphasize the natural wrinkles on the lips. Mix sugar with honey, apply to lips and rub lightly with a terry towel. What remains are velvety soft lips on which the lipstick lasts particularly long.

Use waterproof makeup even in winter

If you sweat or shed tears, foundation and kajal “run” quickly if you don’t use waterproof products. Therefore, always use waterproof make-up, preferably branded products with natural ingredients, so as not to tire your skin and eyes unnecessarily. For a dramatic smokey eye look: It is best to use powder based eyeshadows and prime with a primer beforehand. Lasts for hours!

Use creams and powder products

Two is better! For perfect hold, it is sometimes worth using both cream and powder products. Whether it’s blush, bronzer, eyeshadow or contouring, a creamy foundation topped with powder not only ensures that your makeup doesn’t smudge, it also boosts pigmentation. It is important to apply all cream products before setting them with powder. Otherwise, your makeup can quickly become smudged.

Long stop at the oven

The well-known baking trend has little to do with baking, but instead uses your own body heat to combine concealer with a loose powder. For this purpose, after applying the foundation, a loose powder is picked up with a make-up sponge and generously applied to the concealer. Instead of blending, the powder is left on the face for about 5-10 minutes. Then blend the excess product with a powder brush and BOOM – the makeup is firmly in place!

Apply an eyeshadow base

What applies to face make-up also applies to eyeshadow: a good foundation is the essence of everything. If you don’t have an eyeshadow base at hand, you can simply get your concealer here. You can dab it on the lid and fix it with a clear powder. You can then apply eyeshadow as usual. This will not only last longer, but the colors will also appear more intense. The foundation is especially important if you tend to have oily skin!

Fix your makeup

Please don’t get irritated by questionable tutorials and get carried away with hairspray experiments! It smells disgusting, sticks to the skin and ultimately attracts attention, in the truest sense of the word. To fix the make-up it is better to use nebulized thermal water or fixing spray. The fine mist from the can combines with makeup, which applies more evenly and lasts longer. The setting spray is now available in drugstores under a number of brands and in different finishes, depending on whether you prefer it matte or shimmery.

fingers out of face

Of course, if you focus, you won’t notice if you’re fiddling with your face with your fingers, mindlessly propping your chin, or helplessly scratching your forehead. Be careful and keep your fingers away from your face. Otherwise, it’s no wonder your makeup smudges and fades quickly — pimples are unavoidable, by the way, too.
