“Banana Botox”: banana peel against wrinkles

People & Style

We now know that TikTok trends can hardly be surpassed in terms of curiosity. But now a beauty trick is going viral on the platform, which makes even hardened TikTok users take notice: The so-called “Banana Botox” is intended to visibly reduce wrinkles – and only with the help of a banana peel! STYLEBOOK meets dermatologist Dr. Timm Golüke and reveals what is really behind the hack.

Younger skin in seconds? “Banana Botox”, also called “Banana Peeling”, is the latest attempt by many influencers to counteract wrinkles without any beauty intervention. STYLEBOOK asked the experts if it would work.

How does banana botox work?

Basically, “Banana Botox” works very simply. All you need is a ripe banana, or rather its peel. So the next time you eat a banana, take the peel and rub the insides all over your face for about a minute or two—the banana peel is ready. According to TikTok, the level should run for about 15 minutes. After that, you should wash off the remnants thoroughly. The process can be repeated several times a week.

Influencers are thrilled

While the botox effect of the banana trend is debatable, the internet seems to be raving about it. The hashtag #bananapeel has a total of 65 million hits (Status: May 09, 2023) now on TikTok. The banana peel is recycled in a very sustainable way and cheerfully rubbed on the face. But that is not all. The shell of the superfood is not only used against wrinkles, but also as a mask for dark circles or to fight acne. Some users swear by the “Banana Botox,” even though there’s often no before-and-after video comparison that shows visible wrinkle minimization.

What can “Banana Botox” really do?

Bananas are rich in potassium and vitamins and have a positive effect on our blood sugar levels. At least that’s the case when fruit is on the menu and not on the dressing table. However, positive effects can also be drawn from the “Banana Botox” for the skin. The peel of a ripe banana contains silicon and vitamins A and B. “Silicon in particular is ideal for collagen production and contains enzymes that improve skin elasticity,” says dermatologist Dr. Timm Golüke on STYLEBOOK.

The skin can then feel tighter as a result. However, unlike true botox, beauty makeup won’t make wrinkles disappear. This is known to have a much deeper effect on the muscle level, whereas banana peel only shows superficial effects. “Banana Botox” is not a neurotoxin substitute, but it can make the complexion smoother.

What should I consider before applying?

As before any application of a new product or active ingredient to the skin, Dr. Timm Golüke to first do a so-called patch test. “To do this, he rubs a small piece of the inside of the peel on the back of his hand.” If redness or swelling occurs, or if your skin starts to burn, you should never use “Banana Botox” on your facial skin. It is also important to wash the banana thoroughly before using. “Microorganisms, or even pesticide residues, can cause infections in the skin, leading to rashes or rosacea.” If you have further concerns, it is best to consult your dermatologist to make sure you are not harming your skin unnecessarily.
