Cosmetics and creams are no longer only available in pharmacies, discounters have long since discovered the lucrative market for themselves. Cien is the name of the private label of the international Lidl group. But how did the name actually come about? And what are the flagship products? The discounter not only offers cheap spaghetti, cola and the like from its own brands, but discounters such as Lidl, Aldi and Co. also offer cosmetic products. Lidl’s brand is called Cien. Reason enough to take a closer look at the products.

Where does Lidl’s name Cien come from?

Cien means ‘hundred’ in Spanish – and the brand consequently stands for ‘100% quality, purity and beauty’, as a Lidl spokesperson explains when asked about STYLEBOOK. And indeed: in the “Ökotest” the corresponding cosmetic products almost always receive top marks.

In spring 2021, for example, two roll-on deodorants received the “very good” rating due to their flawless ingredients. We are talking about “Cien Pure Freshness 48h” and “Cien Nature Bio-Citrus.” In August 2021 the shampoos were put to the test and Cien left far behind the competition, even the much more expensive one. The “Day by Day Fruit/Vitamin” shampoo was the clear test winner with an overall rating of 1.9.2

Lidl’s Cien is over 40 years old

Lidl launched its first Cien products in 1982. They are manufactured in the Dalli factories. However, the company does not produce exclusively for Lidl. In addition to Cien, the family business in Stolberg in the Rhineland also produces for its own brand Dm Balea. The Dalli factory was founded in 1845 by Andreas August Wirtz. Initially, only soaps were produced in Stolberg. In addition to Cien and Balea, the family business also produces for the Aldi brand Tandil or Blik by Penny. Around 2,000 people work at the Dalli-Werke.

In 2014, the cosmetics line brought a prominent testimonial to Boots with Sophia Thomalla. Under the slogan “Be kind to yourself”, the presenter advertised on various channels not only for Cien, but also for the Lidl Esmara fashion line.

The wide range of Cien

Today the Cien range includes 72 products. In 2020, Lidl expanded the brand with its own line of natural cosmetics and has been running Cien nature ever since. As a result, customers can buy deodorants, shampoos and creams in the 3,200 branches in Germany and also abroad. Lidl has around 11,550 branches in 29 countries.
