Free cabins in Sweden: how it works

Travel

Many are familiar with the Swedish public access right, which allows free camping in nature. But you can also stay overnight for free in numerous huts in the country.

Stay free and close to nature? Travelers to Sweden can do this in around 200 free cabins. This was underlined by the Swedish tourist association Visit Sweden.

Free accommodation ranges from rustic forest cabins to newer buildings. Furnishings range from simple to comfortable, but often an outdoor bathroom and wood-burning stove come standard. However, running water is not available everywhere.

Conditions for free accommodation in Swedish cabins

The system is based on the fact that guests not only guarantee cleanliness in the huts, but also limit the length of stay to one night. According to the information it is not possible to book the accommodations: if in doubt, simply move in together, because each hut offers space for several sleeping guests.

Information on where to find one of the many free shelters to stay in Sweden can be obtained from the municipalities or Visit Sweden.
