Golden Globes 2024: Red dominated the (dark) red carpet.

Technically, most celebrities wore black at the 2024 Golden Globes: from Rosamund Pike in an archival Dior dress to Hari Nef in Alexandre Vauthier and Dua Lipa in Schiaparelli to Pedro Pascal in a headband and pretty much any man wearing a dress. But since black is the absence of color and therefore not visible in the color spectrum, it was red that most noticeably dominated the burgundy carpet that evening.

Red represents danger, courage, romance and anger – all things the actors proudly have direct access to. Red was also dominant in the Spring/Summer 2023 collections and permeated much of last year’s celebrity style moments. See: Kylie Jenner, EmRata and Dua Lipa, Zoë Kravitz’s lonely red sock or Kendall Jenner’s knitted sweater. And so perhaps it is logical that the first awards ceremony of 2024 is bathed in the same color.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of all the celebrities who wore red in some way on the Golden Globes red carpet: Florence Pugh in Valentino, Selena Gomez in Armani Privé, Julianne Moore in Bottega Veneta, Ayo Edebiri in Prada and Danielle Brooks in Moschino . But red, the color of revolution, looked best on those who pushed the traditional boundaries of event attire. People like Billie Eilish, whose ironic and severe librarian look was broken up by red hair and red socks, and Barry Keoghan, who wore a checked Louis Vuitton suit with a trouser chain, reminiscent of the punk uniforms of VOGUE World ushers of this year remembered. “The whole thing is a little crazy but beautiful,” Keoghan’s stylist Ilaria Urbinati said of the look, “rebellious, adventurous and creative.” In our image gallery we show off the bright red looks from the wine red carpet of the 81st Golden Globes.
