This is how we wear baggy pants today

People & Style

In the ’90s, jeans couldn’t sit low enough on the hips. Of course we are talking about baggy jeans. They were the favorite pants of ultra cool skaters, rappers and ravers. In 2023 the baggy is back – and now it’s getting a modern, feminine update.

We are used to the return of style from the 90s and 00s: after bomber jackets, cropped T-shirts and platform soles, another garment is now making a comeback in our wardrobe: baggy jeans! This year it’s even located a little below the hip bone, giving us a little nostalgia.

They were the favorite jeans of hip hop stars

Extremely baggy pants actually have their origin in the music scene. The baggy became famous thanks to rap and hip-hop stars who combined the jeans with huge hoodies, XXL football jerseys or T-shirts. As their trademark, casual jeans soon found many fans among teenagers, especially boys, all over the world. Back then, anyone who wanted to look particularly cool even wore extremely loose-fitting trousers under the buttocks – even the speed camera of boxer shorts was considered good manners. It is precisely this nonconformity that has undoubtedly made baggy jeans something special and helped them become very popular. Female hip-hop stars like members of TLC then popularized the baggy among young women as well.

What is the difference from loose fit jeans?

Many confuse baggy jeans with loose fit jeans, which are denim pants with a wider cut. Although they look similar, they are usually cut straight. With baggy pants, the crotch is much lower, the whole thing looks a bit baggy overall, but more casual at the same time. The new jeans designs are also wide and low, but they give a much better silhouette and flatter the figure, while the body disappears under the baggy jeans. This is why baggy jeans can now be styled much more feminine and suitable for everyday use.

Who fits in baggy jeans?

Baggy jeans can really wear any figure! If you prefer to hide your tummy a little, you can choose a slightly higher waistband, because the waist height doesn’t necessarily have to be low-waisted, but can also sit a little higher, which doesn’t detract from the casualness of the jeans desired. If you want to wear baggy clothing, however, you have to accept that the dropped crotch and baggy shape will make your legs look a little shorter.

The Baggy has grown up

Baggy as a relic of 90s denim has grown and become much more modern and feminine. In addition to the long version, the baggy is now also available in a cropped version. With this silhouette, which creates a lot of volume in the legs, we prefer to wear skintight tops tucked into the waistband. Sneakers go perfectly with wide ankle-length trousers and long baggy jeans go well with pumps or ankle boots, in the truest sense of the word. At the same time, the legs are extended, which are otherwise visually rather shortened by the baggy’s wide legs and the low crotch.

“I’ve waited a long time for this comeback! When I was growing up in fashion, there was nothing I loved more than hip hopper style, much to my parents’ annoyance. But today I’m no longer wearing baggy jeans, which I fell in love with again this year, in a baggy, hip-hop way, but I just let them sit on my body in their knowing nonchalance.Baggy jeans are super easy to style, they always look casual and go particularly well with tops and trainers. tighter gymnastics, or in the summer with nice tops and flip flops. I hope the trend stays with us for a long time. A personal tip from me: as I have slightly wider hips but narrower waist, it took me a while finding the perfect pair of baggy jeans. Because even though the jeans in the store were labeled “baggy”, they often looked more like “mom jeans” to me. That’s why I focused my search on the term “Relaxed Fit” and then I’ve always gotten two sizes up. But don’t worry – this doesn’t change the basic shape of the style! However, this selection favors the loose, casual fit of the pants and is also extremely comfortable. “- Desiree Oostland, STYLEBOOK
